Grand Union Stores!

And now, introducing my masterpiece...

As I started to learn more about supermarkets and supermarket history, I was fascinated by the Grand Union chain. I was not quite old enough to walk when most of its stores closed in 2001, and any substantive information about it online can be rather elusive. So, eventually, I thought, if I can make spreadsheets of existing Krasdale or Associated Group stores, why not former Grand Union stores as well?

Now, I must admit, NY Retail Roundup has an absolutely amazing list of hundreds of former GU locations, but it's not complete. It, for instance, does not list street addresses, and it is missing many locations.

So here is my own attempt at the last word in Grand Union lists! It's not perfect (probably it's missing hundreds of locations), but it is as far as I can tell the most complete list of former Grand Union locations available on the internet. You might notice I haven't been posting anything much for the last few days - because this took up most of my free time!

As I said, I'm sure it's missing hundreds of former GU locations, so any input is welcomed! Leave a comment on this post or email me at njsupermarkets@gmail.com with additional information, corrections, or anything else. And make sure you scroll to the right to see the notes about certain stores.

Additional information was obtained from Josh Austin's Flickr photostream and Jack Thomas's Flickr photostream.

  1. I have another location for you. 3681 U.S. 9, Freehold, NJ.

I think that it closed no later than the 70s. It was later Norkus Fun Town toy store and Freehold Music. It sounds like this may be becoming an Aldi next.

Not sure if you are interested in what stores were before GU, but the Manalapan store that became Best Buy was a Chanel lumber before it was GU.

  2. Wow! Extremely detailed; great job! Albertsons Florida Blog and I have been working on some tables to post over at my blog, so I know how much time you had to have spent researching to put this together. This will be a great resource for anyone interested in this information!

    1. Thanks again Retail Retell! I have a few more spreadsheets coming, although this is the hardest yet. I don't know how Groceteria does it. If you have anything to add or know anyone who might, feel free to send anything my way!

    2. You're very welcome! Looking forward to those other spreadsheets. And unfortunately, I don't think I'll be of much help, but I'd be glad to share information if I ever find any!

  3. We had one in the Bronx, around 164th Street and Ogden Avenue (the Highbidge neighborhood near Yankee Stadium). I recall being fascinated by the conveyor that went into the basement when I was a child in the early 1950's.

    1. Cool! I didn't know that was a Grand Union, although I've been by there. I visited the Fine Fare at Ogden and 166th (really nice store).

  4. If you need info on the former East Hartford Grand Union store, it became an ADP office, then in the early 1990s, it was torn down to make a town green. It was in a small shopping center (besides GU, there was 3 local stores in it)
