The Market Report is thrilled to present its first reader-contributed historical photo! Here's a look at the Millburn ShopRite when it was a Good Deal Supermarket.
The above photo comes to us courtesy of the
Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society. Although the year is unknown, it's most likely in the late 1960s or early 70s, as the store opened as a Village ShopRite between 1976 and 78. I'm also slightly confused by the name "Staff" which overwhelms Good Deal on both signs. Can anyone offer insight into what that meant? Approximately the same angle, shown in an October 2016 photo from The Market Report...
It's not surprising that these panels used to be windows, or that the storefront used to face Main Street. What is surprising is that Village Super Market chose to close up all those beautiful windows in favor of these awful blank stucco panels! You can read the full tour

Perhaps it has to do with the newer orientation of the store? Depending on what is in those sections now, there might be shelves or even storage areas that wouldn't make much sense to have windows looking into them (or at the back of shelving)?
ReplyDeleteAgreed, that side of the store is frozen and dairy, so not exactly the best to look into. I'm surprised they changed the layout at all; doesn't it make more sense to have the produce/grand aisle on the street and not all the way in the back of the parking lot?
DeleteStaff's Good Deal was a supermarket chain out of PA I believe popular in the 1960's to the early 70's. The was one in Garfield, Nj too on Midland Avenue that now is a strip mall with a dollar store and a little grocery store & a few other retail places. It was a great supermarket chain; too bad they did last.
