It's much more common than you'd think for 1920s or so-era theaters to be built out for use as supermarkets. See this example in Union City, NJ. But here we see a theater just around the corner from a supermarket, and even more interesting, the original sign is still in place (if looking rather worn out at this point).
Here's my picture of the Loews Paradise Theater on Grand Concourse from the next block east, Ryer Ave. It's an incredible building but clearly not getting the love it needs. As I mentioned in the Pioneer post yesterday, this is not the most wonderful neighborhood and you can see more of what I mean in the picture above. Anyway, tomorrow we're moving closer to Fordham University with a small store that's positioning itself more upscale for that audience. Check back!
