TOUR: Western Beef Supermarket - Soundview North, Bronx, NY

In the 2015-16 A&P bankruptcy, the Pathmark at Bruckner Blvd and Leland Ave closed and was replaced after extensive renovation by a Western Beef Supermarket. It's worth noting that this store is across Bruckner from a ShopRite and just to the east along Bruckner from the Soundview Food Bazaar. Let's return to this graphic I made for the Food Bazaar post:
So we've seen the Associated and Fine Fare to the north, and I just mentioned the Food Bazaar and ShopRite. We're at the Western Beef to the north, with the southern one being the Rosedale Ave location. The Key Food and Golden Mango to the southeast are our next two tours. The Associated to the southwest has become a Food Universe and here are the Met Foods, the Compare Foods, and the CTown.
Heading into the store (this being, I believe, the second newest Western Beef out there), we find a clean, bright, and extremely colorful produce department.
There's basically nothing left from Pathmark inside, and the facade has been extensively renovated. We have produce in the first aisle, with the walk-in meat department and seafood at the back of the first aisle. Dairy lines the back wall and the last aisle, with frozen opposite in the last aisle. A sizable deli-bakery is in the front corner, with checkouts along the front wall.
Some local personality and a bit of Western Beef's humor on the front wall here.
Unlike Forest Avenue, the meat department is in a corner here, with windows facing the main sales floor. The back wall of the meat department is a huge service counter.
The first aisle lines the side of the meat department, with beer on that wall and seafood on the back wall.
This was the first store I photographed this day, and oddly, my phone had some glitch that it wasn't focusing right, so my picture of the seafood counter and back wall didn't come out. Luckily, I caught that early and the rest of my pictures that day came out just fine.
Sparkly-clean grocery aisles!
Dairy runs along the back wall, and continues along the side wall. Frozen faces and extends into coffin cases in the middle of the aisle. I like the way the store opens up in this area.
Deli-bakery in the front corner, with a large selection but a small service counter.
Like I said for Forest Avenue, try the semolina bread. Seriously. And the garlic knots. And the chocolate chip cookies. You won't regret it.
Bread faces the grocery aisles (and here, you can see how the cases are stocked directly from the in-store bakery behind the displays). Facing the registers around the corner is cakes, pies, and so on.
While the floor is slightly similar to the Pathmark Path to Savings flooring, it's definitely custom for Western Beef. That rounds out our tour here, and also wraps up our coverage of Soundview! Up next we're heading to the southeast to Castle Hill, which is the neighborhood that continues behind the Bruckner ShopRite.
