Route 54 is the main road along Keuka Lake's east side, with 54A going up the west side. 54 goes from Bath to Penn Yan, where it turns east and heads out to Dresden on Seneca Lake. This store is located north of Bath on 54 between Bath and Hammondsport.
It's unclear whether this store's original tenant, Deal's Super Duper, had any relation to the other assorted Super Duper supermarkets in the NY-PA area. I know there were several, but I believe the only one still operating is Dave's Super Duper in Honesdale, PA. It was later taken over by Save-A-Lot, which drpep captured here in 2009. In 2012, Save-A-Lot moved to the former P&C Foods to the south of Bath and this 18,000 square foot store was taken over by Clark Specialty Co., a sheet metal producer (sheet metal is one of the largest industries in this part of the Finger Lakes, especially since aircraft is made in Hammondsport). They vacated the space a little more than five years later, leaving the building abandoned but unfortunately with few grocery store remnants, so nothing to see inside.
Posted in the window.
Entrance foyer.
The entrance and exit still look just like a grocery store!
It's a little difficult to tell from the picture, but the facade actually covers up a series of angled panels, which seem to be in an accordion-type pattern.
One lonely Tops cart corral (which oddly looks quite new) in the otherwise abandoned parking lot. We've got an update to another former supermarket here in Bath on Grocery Archaeology tomorrow!
Suggestions are that the Super Duper name was connected to Flickinger (which I seem to remember being a wholesale company), so perhaps it was just a name they allowed stores they supplied to use?
ReplyDeleteVery likely, like I believe Red & White was. Thanks for the history!
