Original Tenant: A&P
Address: 1491 NJ-23, Wayne, NJ
Opened: 1960s
Closed: unknown
Later Tenants: unknown
Photographed: August 2019
We saw the former A&P and its replacement up in the Preakness section of Wayne, today's snapshot is one of the other former A&Ps in Wayne, in the Packanack section. There are at least four -- these three, plus a former Futurestore between the the Preakness and Packanack locations which was likely a replacement for the two older stores. The 17,000 square foot store here was expanded, likely by a later tenant, to 23,500 square feet. I photographed it from the parking lot of the Packanack Wayne Shopping Center directly across the street, which is anchored by a Foodtown residing in a former barrel-roof Food Fair. That wraps up Wayne! Now unfortunately there's no geographically elegant way to do this, so we're just gonna hop across most of Passaic County out to Midland Park in Bergen County, then on to Paramus to the east. Check out our store tour tomorrow on The Market Report!

  1. This has been a Staples as long as I can remember- it recently closed without much warning.

  2. There was also one more A&P in Wayne on top of those.

Up the highway from where you were photographing, there’s a building that used to be a Bradlees-Stop & Shop supercenter. A&P of course went in there after the fact.

Then even further up the highway, A&P was working on a replacement store for that one in Pompton Plains after Jamesway went out of business. They closed the Wayne location sometime around 2000 and then the store was vacant for about a year and a half once Bradlees bit it in 2001. Kohl’s took over the entire building.

    1. Ah yes, that's right. I forgot about that. Although I was under the impression (which I assume is not true, based on what you said) that the Kohl's was a new-build on the site of the former A&P.

    2. Nope. Full gut and takeover of both stores. I used to go by there quite often during this time and I watched them working on it.

Same thing happened with the Clifton Kohl’s, which was the same kind of setup. Only difference is that they didn’t take all of the A&P portion and subdivided it.
