As we head out of Paterson, we'll be moving through Clifton to the south, Woodland Park to the west, and then into Passaic, the secondary city in this part of the county. Our first Clifton store is this former ACME, which Acme Style has covered extensively here. So I won't go too far into it. One thing I remain unsure of, though, is whether the space that's now Big Lots was the extent of the ACME, or whether it also took up the space now occupied by Dollar Tree.
Just next to the Dollar Tree to the left was a small ethnic market, which we are also seeing today. Check it out here! And up next, we're not going very far away... just to the west to see another former supermarket tomorrow.
No actual knowledge, but looking at the Acme Style post you linked would make it seem that the Acme was in fact just the Big Lots. Things like the post that shows what would have been produce on the "left side wall" as one example. Also the overhead photo looks like there is a line that runs across the roof just about where the right side of the Dollar Tree "bump" is, making it seem that was a divide in stores at one time.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this was an early(ier) set-up where you had just a supermarket and either an early small discount store or even something like a Woolworth? We had one similar to that here with Woolworth and Price Chopper side by side, so a similar setup could have worked here with the Woolworth (or whatever) being both the Dollar Tree space and the now vacant Filipino store to the left of it you have in Part II.
A month later... I finally remember to reply to your comment. Anyway, yes, I think you're right about ACME's setup and I think it's entirely possible your theory of department store/supermarket is true.
