Update: Foodtown - Caldwell, NJ

Super Foodtown of Caldwell Owner:  Jack Shakoor / Jack's Supermarkets Opened:  1980s(?) Previous Tenants:  Hy's Foodtown Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  370 Bloomfield Ave, Caldwell, NJ Photographed:  May 2019 and January 2021 We're returning to the Super Foodtown of Caldwell, NJ, after our store tour back in June 2018 , to check out some of the new(-ish) graphics along the front of the store, which you can see above as most of the storefront is a blank wall. A nice touch! (I also wanted a daytime picture.) Near the entrance is a photo that's circulated both in historical photo books and on the internet, depicting Hy's Foodtown which previously occupied the space. Now for a look inside. I visited briefly in January of 2021 and was very surprised and pleased to see the store is receiving a remodel inside. Although it was certainly old on the inside, it was maintained very well. As we'll see, there are more delu...

TOUR: ShopRite - West Caldwell, NJ

ShopRite of West Caldwell Owner:  Dara Sblendorio / Sunrise Supermarkets Opened: 1969 Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  540 Passaic Ave, West Caldwell, NJ Photographed:  June 2016 & May 2019 A favorite among supermarket fans around the mid-Atlantic region comes to The Market Report today! This legendary pagoda-inspired building was constructed in 1969 for an older ShopRite over in Caldwell , which has since been kept by Sunrise Supermarkets as a liquor store. Sunrise also owns the pagoda-free Parsippany ShopRite . The story here is that original owner Ned Gladstein was fascinated by Japanese architecture and traveled to Japan many times, so that when he had the opportunity to build a brand-new ShopRite back in 1969, the Japanese style was extended throughout the store. (In 2017, Gladstein's daughter Dara Sblendorio took over the West Caldwell and Parsippany locations, along with the liquor stores in...

560 Passaic Ave, West Caldwell, NJ

Original Tenant:  A&P Address:  560 Passaic Ave, West Caldwell, NJ Opened:  1960s Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  CVS Photographed:  May 2020 The southeastern corner of Bloomfield and Passaic Avenues in West Caldwell is home to this former centennial style A&P, believe it or not, despite the extensive renovation done around 2010 by CVS. The centennial roof is still intact behind the new CVS facade, though it can't be seen in the angle above. You can check it out in a Google Street View here . Until recently, the storefront retained its distinctive facade . In the street views, you can see the ShopRite just to the right, which we'll be touring tomorrow on The Market Report . See the former ACME across the street here and the Stop & Shop just to the west here .

775 Bloomfield Ave, West Caldwell, NJ

Original Tenant:  ACME Markets Address:  775 Bloomfield Ave, West Caldwell, NJ Opened:  1950s Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  May 2020 The intersection of CR-613 (Passaic Avenue) and CR-506 (Bloomfield Avenue) has four corners, three of which have supermarkets or former supermarkets. The northwestern corner has a Stop & Shop , which we saw yesterday on The Market Report. The northeastern corner has a former 1950s-era ACME, shown here. The approximately 25,000 square foot building has since been subdivided, with a variety of small storefronts in the front and left sides of the strip mall, which extends farther to the right than the ACME would have. The back part of the ACME is now a Harmon Face Values drugstore. It looks to have been subdivided long ago, as there are virtually no remnants of the ACME around (I doubt the clock tower was ACME's tower; the 1950s-era stores were not typically built with towers). ...

TOUR: Stop & Shop - West Caldwell, NJ

Stop & Shop Opened:  2009 Previous Tenants:  Stop & Shop > Kings Location:  875 Bloomfield Ave, West Caldwell, NJ Photographed:  May and December 2020 Bloomfield Avenue, or County Route 506, is a major thoroughfare through Essex County, originating to the west at US-46 on the Pine Brook (Morris County)/West Caldwell (Essex County) border, then passing through West Caldwell, Caldwell, Verona, Montclair, Bloomfield, Belleville, and Newark before finally spilling into Broadway just north of downtown Newark. We're beginning at the west end, just to the west of its intersection with Passaic Avenue/CR-613. We'll be spending a lot of time at that corner over the next few days. Today's store was built as a 30,000 square foot Stop & Shop with an attached Medimart pharmacy in the 1970s before being sold to local chain Kings Food Markets in the 1980s when Stop & Shop pulled out of New Jersey for the first time. This was one of five stores s...
