We're here in downtown Irvington to tour the 30,000 square foot Supremo of Irvington. This was actually the first Supremo I went to, back in probably 2014, and it honestly was not in great shape. But despite the fact that it hasn't received a full renovation, my 2020 visit showed the store looking much better than it ever did before. The store actually isn't all that old, having opened around 2005 in a former Valley Fair department store (but I don't know the timeline for anything other than Supremo's opening).
The store is oriented towards the front with checkouts along the front end. The parking lot is in the rear, with a walkway between this building and the rest of the strip. Notice the Valley Fair Laundromat still in business next door! The entrance and exit are actually on the side wall near the front, with produce and meat taking up the grand aisle. Seafood and dairy line the rest of the back wall, with frozen in the last aisle. Deli takes up the front left corner.
One of the noticeable differences from my earlier visit is that, despite the fact that the store was just as busy, it was cleaner than previously. I remember the floor being littered with garbage, leaves, and so on here in produce, none of which were visible. In fact, the store was pretty much spotless throughout.
Customer service/security at the front of the grand aisle. For decor that's already 15+ years old, it's looking pretty fantastic.
Packaged meats and cold cuts take up the back corner of the grand aisle.
Service butcher window and seafood counter at the back of the grand aisle, with dairy lining the rest of the back wall. Despite the fact that this store feels a bit cramped in this area, it's actually one of the larger Supremos at over 35,000 square feet.
Moving into the grocery aisles...
I've always thought Supremo's grocery aisles were very attractive. I like the lighting on each shelf. I've also been enjoying my periodic trips to Supremo lately because I find their sales to be excellent.
Supremo sells Essential Everyday storebrand items, along with Wild Harvest organics. I have also found the occasional Krasdale or Parade item at Supremo.
International aisle, one of several here.
Taking a closer look at dairy on the back wall. We can see that a past tenant's expansion (or possibly Supremo before it opened) means that the last few aisles are in a separate room with a lower ceiling, along with the deli.
Looking down the last aisle in the main store.
Dairy continues in the expansion.
Grocery aisles at the end. There are 12 aisles in total here, not counting the grand aisle.
Frozen foods lining both sides of the last aisle. The cases on the right look much newer, which makes me wonder whether the frozen foods decor is newer than the rest of the store. I don't recall seeing it in the past.
Deli takes up the front corner in the expansion. This store doesn't have a bakery.
Looking across the front-end at the grocery aisles, and the registers...
Look at that floor again! I was very glad to see that this store is looking better than it did before. And I liked the prices! Our final stop in the Newark area will be about three quarters of a mile to the northwest, back over the border into Newark in the Vailsburg neighborhood. Come back tomorrow to check it out!
