Although we saw the ShopRite in Perth Amboy yesterday, today we're seeing the first of our stores really in downtown Perth Amboy. Even so, it's outside of the central part of the city. The 13,000 square foot store is still very nice despite being about 1/4 of the size of the ShopRite. The store is very wide and shallow, with grocery aisles running from side to side. Checkouts line the left side wall, with meat, deli, and prepared foods on the right side; frozen on the front wall and produce/dairy on the back. To make the most sense, we're going to tour the store starting in the back.
The produce and dairy aisle is beautiful. By the way, this store opened around 2010 as a Fine Fare but was purchased about six years later and switched to Tropical. Tropical at the time was a member of Retail Grocers Group supplied by General Trading, same warehouse and cooperative as Fine Fare, but is now a Key Food member.
I love the ceiling fixture here. I like the appearance of the floors, but they are not too friendly to the shopping carts with their seams between the tiles. I've been to several Tropical locations and I must say I've been quite impressed, they are clearly well-run stores.
The meat department, with butcher on the side wall and packaged meats on either side, is at the back right corner of the store.
Clearly the meat department is a very big draw here. The section extends farther out to the right than the rest of the store's wall.
The center of the meat alcove has a few short grocery aisles for additional stock.
Moving into the grocery aisles...
Great looking grocery aisles. Very clean and I love the shelving with lighting.
Look how beautifully stocked those vegetables are! Unfortunately, it looks like these two first shelving sets are missing their lighting.
International aisle.
An alcove right around the corner from meat (which you can see the graphics for in the corner to the left) has the deli and hot food counter on the front wall. There is also a seating area in the corner behind the hot food bar, which has its own entrance.
Frozen foods line the front wall of the store, with stacks and stacks and stacks of sale items in the front left corner near the entrance.
And the checkouts take up the back half of the left side wall of the store.
Check out that Pathmark cart! That's all for this Tropical Supermarket, although I do have more locations coming soon. But we have four more stores in downtown Perth Amboy, starting with tomorrow's store tour here on The Market Report!
