Original Tenant: A&P
Address: 1099 US-46, Parsippany, NJ
Opened: 1960s
We are moving across the highway from today's other post, the Patel Brothers, to two former supermarkets here in the Troy Hills Shopping Center! The first is this former centennial A&P, now extensively renovated but still recognizable way back there behind this new facade. The store is 17,000 square feet, placing it right in line with contemporary centennial stores. There was also a Food Fair, later Pantry Pride, at the other end of the mall which you can check out here. Tomorrow we continue to move west along 46 to our next store over on The Independent Edition!

For some reason the links to the Patel store (and for that matter anything on the marketreport blog page) are not working.
ReplyDeleteNo issue with the Independent Edition or Grocery Archaeology pages.
Yep. Google Domain hosting issue I've had before. I think it's fixed. Sorry and thanks for letting me know!
DeleteThis was the shortest lived A&P Centennial in Morris County, as it opened in October 1966 and closed on June 21, 1975. The store closed just one month after the Whippany A&P. And it wouldn't be too long before another Morris County Centennial closed, as the A&P location on Morris Street in Morristown shut its doors in November 1976.
ReplyDeleteThis Parsippany A&P was actually part of an expansion to the original J.M. Fields Shopping center. This expansion also included a Loew's movie theater along with some smaller shops. The J.M. Fields actually opened in October 1963, but I am not certain if the Food Fair also opened at that time. The Food Fair definitely opened no later than December 9, 1970, however.
In August 1976, Drug Fair opened in the former A&P building and would remain in operation until June 10, 1992. CompUSA then opened in this building in May 1993. My guess is that the unfortunate exterior renovations to the Centennial were made after the Drug Fair closed but before the CompUSA opened.
I believe the CompUSA remained open until the chain's 2007 liquidation. In 2011, Michael's Arts & Crafts actually relocated its Parsippany store from a former Acme on Route 46 to the former A&P.

Thanks for the history!
DeleteMichaels relocated from the former ACME up Route 46 to this former A&P!
ReplyDeleteYes! You're a few days early but that store is coming up shortly.
DeleteI kinda figured! Sorry for jumping the gun for you.
DeleteNot at all! These stores are within 15 minutes or so of where I live so you can be sure I'm getting to all of them!
DeleteUpon doing further research, the Food Fair opened no later than October 8, 1964. Most likely, it opened in October 1963 alongside the J.M. Fields. Also, the Loew's theatre opened a bit earlier than the A&P. (The Loew's opened in April 1966 while the A&P didn't open until October of that year.)

Weren't Food Fair and JM Fields owned by the same company? Or am I misremembering that? If that's true, it would make sense that they opened around the same time here.
DeleteZachary, you are indeed correct, as Food Fair acquired J.M. Fields in 1961.
