The first A&P store in Hackettstown was here at 57 US-46, in a barrel-roof store that was later retrofitted with a Centennial facade. This store came in at just over 18,000 square feet, which is just around the same size as the Centennial purpose-built stores. In the 1980s, A&P constructed a new, 32,000 square foot store at the back of this strip mall, which in turn relocated to 7 Naughright Rd in 1999. That's our other post for the day which you can see here. The newer 80s store in this mall also became a Food Basics for roughly two years in the early 2000s.
The storefront here was later a Blockbuster Video, which you can see in JoshAustin610's photo linked above. Today, most of the strip mall has been converted into medical offices (along with some non-medical tenants, such as a ShopRite Liquor Store and an Italian restaurant). Don't forget to see the Naughright store here, and tomorrow, we move just to the south of Hackettstown for a look at two chain supermarkets on The Market Report!

  1. I've spent quite a bit of time searching for information pertaining to both of the former A&Ps in this shopping center, but I was able to ascertain very little. One piece of info that I did find was a December 11, 1983 article in the Daily Record which discussed that day's opening of a renovated A&P in Hackettstown (which obviously implies that the A&P opening that day was not a relocated store).

Though it doesn't pertain to this shopping center, one interesting thing I did learn was that A&P had a very short-lived store in Mansfield. This supermarket was located in the Mansfield Commons Shopping Center (which is very close to the Mansfield ShopRite), opened in November or December of 1999, and closed in late 2001 or early 2002. On October 5, 2006, Kohl's opened in the former A&P space. (I'm not sure if the building housed any business between the time A&P closed and Kohl's opened.)

    1. Thanks for the history! Yes, the Mansfield was extremely short-lived and there's not much sign of it now, unfortunately, and that's why I didn't photograph it.
