ShopRite of Franklin
Owner: Dominick & David Romano / RoNetco Supermarkets
Ah yes. Shop Rite The Market Place. Love the vintage(-looking?) signage here, although I don't believe the store is actually more than a few decades old.
We enter to produce on the right side of the grand aisle, with deli on the left side, and bakery/seafood at the back. Pharmacy is in an island at the front of the first aisle, with meat on the back wall; dairy is in the last aisle with frozen in an alcove in the front left corner. Worth noting that this store actually smokes their own meat in a smoker outside, although I didn't stop to take a picture because, you know, of the torrential rain downpour.
This store has gotten the same light update as Succasunna and Franklin.
Deli on the left side of the grand aisle in an island.
Here we're looking up to the front of the store. One thing about these RoNetco stores, their layout is not overly logical most of the time.
Very nice bakery department in the back of the grand aisle. Seafood is up next along the back wall...
Impressive seafood department here, too.
On the back wall, we have meats lining both sides of an aisle with candy on the inside of the row of meat cases.
Here's a look at HABA/pharmacy in the first aisles.
Love the mirrored shelf toppers here, not unlike what we saw in Wayne!
Here's candy on the back aisle, with meat in the aisle running along the back wall to the right. It looks like the flooring was replaced in the grocery aisles, but it seems the shelving is original to the store.
The aisles are looking pretty good, whether the flooring is new or not.
Here's a look at the meat aisle (and notice the cases on both sides).
We move into dairy in the back left corner of the store.
The shelving on the left looks newer than the rest of the store.
We move into the front alcove for two freezer aisles. This store is so wide that you can have the full length freezer aisles on the front wall.
I do like the blue paint here, I know I commented on it in one of the previous posts that I wasn't entirely sold on it. We do see significant upgrades on the front end...

It's a big day here in Newton! We are touring three stores in town, starting with this 68,000 square foot ShopRite. The store is preparing for a significant renovation and expansion, which is set to include the property behind the store. All of 475 feet south is a Weis, and there's also an independent supermarket half a mile south in downtown Newton.Ah yes. Shop Rite The Market Place. Love the vintage(-looking?) signage here, although I don't believe the store is actually more than a few decades old.

Looks like new register signs, new lighting, and new flooring. Don't believe me that it was pouring rain when I visited? You can see it in the exterior photos of this store and the others linked above, but you can also see it really clearly through the front windows here! After these stops in Newton, we are continuing south along 206 for our next stop on Grocery Archaeology tomorrow.
The Newton ShopRite (like Franklin) has been in need of a total makeover for decades now. Nice to see they're at least trying! Crazy that they've been held up for a decade over environmental cleanup on the property behind the store. The interior is looking pretty great considering how dated the store used to look. I know this place used to do an insane volume of business years back before there was other competition in Newton like Walmart and Weis. Both A&P and Grand Union had stores nearby back in the 70's and 80's but neither one could survive up against this place.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing pictures of the dated interior online and I was so disappointed they had redone it! Not that the new interior doesn't look good, though. I think the store still does excellent volume, but so does Weis from what it looks like.
DeleteThis ShopRite actually opened on or around June 2, 1972, per an article in that day's edition of The Evening News (of Paterson, NJ).
ReplyDeleteBased on the photos that Zachary uploaded, this ShopRite looks quite appealing, as it seems to contain a healthy blend of older and newer elements. I loved the vintage ShopRite sign on the store's exterior. Per a December 2021 street view available on Google Maps, a giant American flag now covers much of the "Shop Rite The Market Place" sign. And unfortunately, the red-on-yellow ShopRite lettering has since been replaced with red-on-white lettering (that's clearly in a different font).

Wow, so they have updated the signage! So great that Zach caught the old look shortly before the update.
DeleteOh, I see that! Thanks for the update!
