TOUR: Weis Markets - Newton, NJ

Weis Markets
Opened: 1990s
Previous Tenants: none
Location: 121 Water St, Newton, NJ
Photographed: July 2020
It's time for our second stop in Newton! We saw the ShopRite immediately next door today also, as well as Hayek's Market downtown. This store, which is roughly 10,000 square feet smaller than the ShopRite but, as we'll see, far better organized, was constructed in the early 90s as Weis's first New Jersey store. It was extensively renovated around 2012, and here's a look at what it previously looked like. It's looking quite good, although we can tell that the bones are older than, say, Franklin.
We enter to the grand aisle on the right side of the store, with produce on the left side and bakery, deli, and seafood lining the right side and back of the grand aisle. Meats then line the back wall, with pharmacy and HABA in the first few aisles. Frozen and dairy are at the far left of the store.
I've enjoyed Weis's bakery departments; although I don't think they're that special, they are consistently good.
I do love this decor package, though. I understand its time has come to be replaced, but it sure does look good in this store and others.
The pharmacy is on the other side of that wall that says "produce".
Meat continues along the back wall from seafood. I guess if there's one thing I don't love about this decor package, it's the flooring. What's with the giant brown boxes that look like bad patching?
I do like the wood-texture flooring in the HABA department, though.
Heading back to the rear wall of the store, we find the service butcher about halfway across the back wall. Interesting that it's not combined with seafood, which we see in Franklin and other Weis stores.
Cold cuts up next on the back wall. Here we're looking towards the grand aisle.
Grocery aisles looking good too, although stock here was a bit lighter than we've seen at the other stores.
Looking towards the back of the store. Notice the hanging promotional signage in the aisles, here advertising gluten free foods and lower prices. As I've mentioned, price is a huge factor on any store's success in New Jersey because ShopRite is so prevalent here and they are very aggressive on price. (That doesn't mean everything is cheaper there all the time; Stop & Shop, Weis, ACME, and Foodtown frequently beat them, among others. But it's certainly the trend that ShopRite is the cheapest.)
Dairy department looking fantastic in the back corner here. Aisle 13 has one side of frozen foods, aisle 14 is all frozen, and aisle 15 is one side frozen and one side dairy.
It looks like this row of freezers may actually be original to the store, even though most of the other fixtures were replaced in the 2012 remodel.
Notice the difference in ages of the cases.
Here we have frozen and dairy in the last aisle. Bread is in the front corner here, with customer service and then registers on the front wall.
That is all for the Weis in Newton, and it's also our last Sussex County Weis. There is one more in New Jersey, which we're going to see in our next group, but for now don't forget to check out the other posts linked above, and tomorrow, we are continuing south along 206 for our next stop on Grocery Archaeology!

  1. If I didn't know it was a new build, I would swear from the exterior that this was a former Pathmark.

    1. Newton never had a Pathmark but did have an A&P, Grand Union and ACME (on the other side of town)!

    2. It does have that Pathmark-y exterior look to it.

And Acme Style, I was so disappointed that I totally forgot to head over to the old ACME! It just wasn't on my list for that day and I haven't been back to Newton since.

Looks like it was built then added onto (8,000 Sq. Ft.) in 2001. The photo in that link shows the original design without the current entry (which was apparently done with the addition?).

    1. I believe the new exterior was done during the 2012 remodel.

    2. Makes sense as well.

Unfortunately (unlike your site) the one I linked no longer exists so the only way to see it is that archive site, but it had quite a bit of information relating to the chain (including names for some of their styles), so it is helpful to some degree.

    3. I forgot about The Weis Project! I remember seeing it linked on one of Acme Style's posts way back (Clarks Summit?) but hadn't returned since because it's long gone. Thanks for the link!

  3. This store opened in 1993, but I unfortunately could not ascertain a more specific opening date.

I love the older decor package that this supermarket has, as well as the new decor in the Randolph store. I really wish that Weis was more prevalent in New Jersey, as I think they would be a more formidable competitor to ShopRite than either Acme or Stop & Shop currently is (given Weis' prices and the pleasing ambience found in their stores). While I really like the Acme and Stop & Shop supermarkets of yesteryear, their newer supermarkets leave much to be desired. (Truth be told, I also wasn't a huge fan of A&P's newer supermarkets, though there wasn't anything I disliked about them, either. But it was the classic A&P supermarkets--especially the Centennial stores--that I loved so much.)

    1. All true! I also wish Weis had more stores in New Jersey, but I do think part of their success is that they tend not to take risks like that much. Maybe if any of the NW New Jersey ACMEs go out of business (Oak Ridge, Vernon, Blairstown, Sussex, etc) someday, Weis would want one of them.
