ACME Markets

Previous Tenants: none, Food Fair was previously on this property
Location: 23 Levitt Pkwy, Willingboro, NJ

We arrive at the only ACME currently operating in Willingboro, a town that over the course of its history has had at least three -- this one, which was built in 1993 to replace the two older stores. One was located in the Village Mall, which I have brief coverage of today here and which Acme Style more extensively wrote up back in 2011; the other was located across town (near the former ShopRite) at 498 Beverly Rancocas Rd. By the way, I wrote rather extensively about the history of Willingboro on the former ShopRite post, which is worth a read over, but notice the fact that this store is located on Levitt Parkway, of course named after William Levitt who designed the development.
The 59,000 square foot ACME opened in 1993 according to JoshAustin610, replacing both of the older stores. It was renovated once, receving PF&H 3.0 in 2013. Although it was renovated, it retains a lot of its original 90s Red White & Blue decor, which you can see in full at Acme Style. Now, I find the RW&B decor to be one of the ugliest decor packages of all time (but then I generally find the 1990s to be a low point in supermarket design), and I don't find PF&H 3.0 to be amazing, but I have two thoughts. First, PF&H 3.0 consistently looks better in person than in pictures. Second, I think it works pretty well in this space. Produce in the front corner is looking good with cases painted in the 2013 remodel, and possibly some replaced more recently...
Produce is in the front right corner, with bakery lining the right side of the first aisle. Meat is in the back right corner, with seafood and deli on the back wall. Frozen is in the middle of the store, with dairy on the left side of the store and pharmacy in the front left corner.
The flooring could stand to be replaced here, but otherwise the store is looking good. And the floor is in fact in very good shape, just doesn't exactly match.
Moving into the meat department. As we see, the store is plenty attractive but, um, not very exciting.
In the back of the store there is an indentation on the back wall with the deli and seafood counters. We'll get there, but first a look at the grocery aisles...
Once again, really nicely maintained, and bright and clean, but sadly deadly boring.
Looking across the middle of the store from the front aisle. These large 90s ACMEs were frequently designed with a middle aisle splitting the store in half from front to back.
Deli and seafood with newly painted cases and pretty nice looking decor. Why are seafood and deli the same color here? I don't like the yellow for seafood, and I also think leaving all the bones of the RW&B decor underneath is lazy although once again, it looks much better in person than in pictures.
Freezer cases were almost definitely replaced in the 2013 remodel.
Well, I suppose not all of them. Still looking good!
Dairy in the back corner and extending down the last aisle.
Notice the keystones remaining from the arches of the RW&B decor!
Paper goods take up the front corner, and I do actually like the trim left here. I just wish there were some signage in this corner. This used to be a very large floral department, which was downsized into an island next to the pharmacy. The pharmacy is on the front wall, with a few short aisles of HABA in front of it.
And beyond the pharmacy, we return to the front end which is clean, bright, and attractive, but again very boring.
Don't forget to see today's look at the former ACME nearby here, and tomorrow, we head on to Edgewater Park for two supermarkets on 130 -- the former Pathmark basically across the street from this store on Grocery Archaeology, and another one just south on 130 here on The Market Report!

  1. "I find the RW&B decor to be one of the ugliest decor packages of all time"

    OUCH!

You would feel differently if you saw it back IN the 90's! It was among the nicer décor packages kicking around back then. The trend was to go all-white and bright after the darker tones of the 70's and 80's. ACME took it up a notch by going all patriotic with their color scheme.

    1. That's what I figured! I know this is one of your favorites so I was pretty sure I'd get some friendly fire over that comment. But yes, unfortunately, I never did see the RW&B decor in the 90s, so I couldn't speak to how it was back then.
