Wegmans Food Markets
Opened: 2009
The layout is pretty standard for what you'd expect in a Wegmans. We enter to the produce department, with prepared foods in the front right corner and deli/bakery lining the right side wall. Seafood/meat are in the back right corner, with dairy along the rest of the back wall. Frozen is somewhere in the middle of the store, with a liquor store in the front left corner. Pharmacy is in an island in the first grocery aisle.
This one is another nighttime store tour, so we won't be seeing too many people but we will be seeing some empty shelves and closed service departments, but rest assured that's only because it's the end of the day. All indications suggest this store is ridiculously high-volume.
We enter and turn right to pass through the arches to bakery and prepared foods.
Subs and pizza are on the front wall, and the cafe actually takes up parts of two floors here. There's a section on the first floor behind the prepared foods area, which we can see below. I think this area is also home to the catering department and so on.
And moving up to the second floor, we see an enormous amount of seating.
We see a pretty standard food court-looking room on the side of the store, and along the front wall (over subs and pizza) there's some very nicely designed, higher end-looking seating.
And of course, we have to check out the views from up here...
Beautiful! Here we're looking down the deli/bakery/prepared foods aisle (bakery to the left) towards the back of the store. And if we pivot to the left about 45 degrees...
Oh yes, I forgot to mention the sushi island here, too. As we see, the seating area actually goes over the arched area we saw on the first floor.
And here we're at the far end of the seating area looking out across the produce department and the rest of the store. You can also clearly see the pharmacy department in the middle here.
And now we're back on solid ground on the first floor, for a look at the first aisle.
I'd imagine a lot of these fixtures have been replaced since the store's opening, which is almost 14 years ago now. Either that or they've been kept up very nicely, and looked pretty sharp when they were installed.
Here's the bakery department, to our left.
And the deli behind the bakery. Service meat and seafood are opposite, on the right side of the first aisle.
If I'm not mistaken, seafood is in an island in the middle. I don't seem to have a picture of it.
And back through the arch to get to the main supermarket. Although we're going to jump up to the front of the store again to see the produce department looking at the back wall...
Clearly, Wegmans has figured out a thing or two about supermarket design. The lighting is exceptional, and the ambient colors really bring out the bright colors of the food itself.
And of course, the cheese island at the back of the produce department, with floral behind it. It's always been a bit odd to me that Wegmans puts its floral departments at the back of the store, but I guess it works.
If we turn left, we see the dairy department, complete with model train.
HABA is in the first few aisles, with pharmacy at the front of the first aisle. I'll say that I also really like the color of the flooring here, since it is concrete but it's a very light concrete, which looks very nice with the overall design.
Pharmacy, of course, was closed for the night.
Moving into the grocery aisles, we see that they're pretty standard, especially what we'd expect from a Wegmans. Very nice, though.
And it felt like there were a lot of nonfoods in this store, although I think a lot of Wegmans sell large nonfoods selections simply because of the large size.
Moving on to frozen...
An aisle and a half of frozen here, but because of how big the store is that's more than enough.
And, of course, rows and rows of dairy along the back wall. Now we see something interesting in the international aisles, that I'm not sure I've seen elsewhere...
The international section, which by the way is pretty hefty here, actually features coolers with refrigerated items from those regions in the aisles, keeping the products from the various countries together. Pretty cool!
In addition to the Mercado Latino and Tastes of Asia, I believe there was an Italian section with fresh pasta and so on. I could be making that up, though...
Paper goods and soda take up the back of the last few aisles, with the liquor store in the front.
Only 20 aisles here, which doesn't seem like a whole lot, but not only are they very long, the perishables area is enormous.
Beautiful wine department here!
And refrigerators for beer and other beverages are in the front of the store, as we see here.

We are here in Fredericksburg, VA, a city of many historical landmarks -- and a 136,000 square foot Wegmans! I unfortunately was only passing through briefly, so we only have this one store and no coverage of the historical landmarks. (No streetside sights here.) This Wegmans, which opened in 2009 and has probably been renovated once since then, is quite beautiful and absolutely enormous. The layout is pretty standard for what you'd expect in a Wegmans. I bet you never see a Wegmans this empty at any other time! Well, that was a fun store. And that's all for Fredericksburg! We're now going to head up to Woodbridge for a week's worth of stores, including a tour of a very cool store in a few days. Come back tomorrow to check out our next store!
There have likely been minor changes as a result of Wegmans adapting to the times, but this store is mostly the same as it was. Peak Wegmans!
ReplyDeleteFor sure! This is one of the best Wegmans I've been in... but the top one has to be Natick.
DeleteI do miss mezzanine seating and larger product varieties being standard for new Wegmans stores. This one is the largest in the chain behind two in NY.
DeleteThere really haven't been too many changes to this store. Other than replacing the original Wegmans logo signage on the exterior, just some minor changes to the Market Cafe and some of the departments have taken place since opening. The store itself is largely the same since opening.
DeleteThanks for the details on this store!
DeleteThat store is absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it is!
