It's time for another Boyer's, this one in more of an urban location than they typically are! With a population of 29,000, Hazleton isn't a major city but it's definitely a sizeable town. This store also has some interesting history, having been built as an outpost of the local Sunshine Market chain, then closed by 1996 when it became a Gerrity's, which in turn appears to have sold the store to Boyer's in the mid 2000s. It's certainly a unique building, which I believe is thanks to Sunshine.
The store has very obviously been expanded many times, bringing it to its current 26,000 square feet from the original 10,500 square foot space. In the picture above, it's not hard to tell where the store was expanded out to the right. The cool classic tower sign is still very much in use and looking great!
Inside, we see Boyer's latest decor package, which we saw in a few linked pictures in Tamaqua.
Oh, and there's my answer to what I was wondering in McAdoo -- a service bakery counter! Bakery, deli, prepared foods, and seafood line the left side of the store with produce in the back left corner and meats on the back wall. Dairy and frozen are on the right side.
As we can see, the interior looks very different from the older stores, with a higher-end decor package overall but still an emphasis on the value side of the market.
Hot food bar opposite the deli and prepared foods department. This area is definitely much more impressive than the older stores.
And a much higher-end style produce department in the back left corner, with the meat department on the rest of the back wall.
Looks like a lot of new fixtures -- maybe even all new fixtures -- were installed in the renovation, which was soon before I visited around 2016-2017. The Boyer's name is still very prominent throughout the store, just like in the older stores.
A look back towards the produce and deli/seafood counters. I believe the area between produce and the grocery aisles is international foods, seen here.
And a look at meat and dairy in the back right corner of the store.
The grocery aisles feel more like an older Boyer's, but again, they're very clean and well-stocked.
The wood flooring doesn't make it into most of the grocer aisles, but it is present in the perimeter. Looks good, and there's what I might describe as a stone texture tile in the grocery aisles.
Frozen foods on the side of the store opposite produce.
New freezer cases for sure. As I said, it looks like most of the fixtures were replaced in the renovation.
I can't quite remember where this alcove is, but I believe it's in the front-right corner of the store -- that is, on the opposite side from bakery and the entrance.
And a look at the front-end and entrance/exit doors. Looking good and freshly renovated!
Boyer's is a relative newcomer to the city, having only been here for about 20 years, but how about a store that's been here for more than 80 years? That's up next, tomorrow on The Independent Edition!
