Weis Markets
Opened: 1995
Today, the store is a total of around 58,000 square feet. It also has the latest decor package, which we can see just a little bit of in this picture on Google Maps.
Lewisburg, which is home to Bucknell University, also has a GIANT about a mile south. There also was previously a Save-A-Lot just over half a mile north, which was owned by Weis, in a former ACME.

Today's snapshot is a quick look at the Weis Markets in Lewisburg, opened as a new-build Weis in 1995. It looks like the store was expanded out the left side at some point later.Today, the store is a total of around 58,000 square feet. The other grocery store in Lewisburg is an ALDI, about a mile and a half north on Westbranch Highway. We'll be taking a look at that store tomorrow, right here on The Market Report!
The original location of the Lewisburg Weis is where AutoZone and the hospital facilities are now located at Loan Road and US 15. The former Weis space was a Staples before AutoZone moved in. The only clue to Weis now is the far right side of the building where the bank is located. The awning is classic 1970s/1980s Weis. The majority of their new build stores at the time had an awning like that across the entire front of the store.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, the story I've heard is that Weis purchased the former Acme/Bi-Lo to keep Giant-PA out of Lewisburg. That was the only large retail space available at the time in an area that was not developing. Weis wasn't going to sell the store to a competitor which forced Giant-PA to build on the south end of town which itself didn't have a lot of large scale retail at the time.
Thanks for the history here!
