Gerrity's ShurSave
Owner: Joyce Fasula
We enter to the grand aisle with bakery in the front right corner, meat on the right side, produce on the left side, and deli on the back. This is the only Gerrity's I can think of that has the meat department right up front like this, making me wonder if maybe the layout is left at least in part from Giant Market.
Gerrity's opened here in 1994 and in 2022 converted the store to The Fresh Grocer from ShurSave.
The prepared foods departments are not large here, but it's still a nice touch. I do like the flooring here, too, with the wood and brick textures.
The seafood counter is in the back right corner of the store, between meat and deli.
I will say I am not a fan of the blue floor Gerrity's typically has in front of the seafood department and I much prefer this wood texture.
And the deli department looks fantastic with what look like rather new cases, nice up-to-date decor, and great flooring.
I don't know that there's a whole lot to talk about in the grocery aisles, as I didn't really notice anything of note. It seems that Gerrity's usually puts the aisle markers in the middle of the aisles rather than at the ends.
Frozen foods in aisles 7 and 8, and we can tell these fixtures are much older, as is the floor.
It's very clean and well-maintained, as most Gerrity's are, but we can feel the store's age more in this part.
Milk and dairy are in the back left corner and then continuing down the last aisle.
Only 10 aisles in total here, so it's definitely on the smaller side, but it's not tiny.
And a look across the front-end...

On the edge of an otherwise fairly residential neighborhood in southeastern Scranton, we encounter today's Gerrity's! It's around 36,000 square feet and housed in a former Giant Market location. More detail on the Scranton-based chain soon. We can feel inside that this store is older, but it's definitely been updated nicely. We enter to the grand aisle with bakery in the front right corner, meat on the right side, produce on the left side, and deli on the back. There are very few supermarkets in the southern part of Scranton, but over the next two days we're going to look at the history of a small grocer in this neighborhood, of which there are several. Check out the first part on Grocery Archaeology tomorrow!
Is this Giant a different chain than the Carlisle PA based chain?
ReplyDeleteYes. Most of their stores in Pennsylvania closed in 1984, but this one was one of the last remaining when it closed in 1994. They stayed in the Binghamton, New York area until 2009 when they sold their stores to Weis.
Delete@The Retail Connection: Actually, this is a completely different Giant than that one you describe. This Giant was part of a small chain of ShurSave affiliates in the Wyoming Valley that lasted until the mid-late 1990's.
DeleteI have a vague memory of a Giant in Carbondale in the 80's. I think that the building is now a Rite Aid. Maybe this same chain?
DeleteAFB: Thanks for the correction! I didn't know about that Giant. There are/were too many to keep track of!
DeleteThanks for the history here!
