Look Inside: Red Berry Farm - Middletown, NY

Red Berry Farm Owner: unknown Opened:  2014 Cooperative:  none Location:  357 NY-211, Middletown, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 It's time for our final Middletown store! There are plenty of grocers in Middletown we haven't covered -- see here for an inexhaustive list -- but those will have to wait until I can get back up to the area again. The Red Berry Farm opened in 2014 in a roughly 8,000 square foot space. And you guessed it from the facade -- the space is half of a former A&P centennial store built in the 1960s, or shortly after the ShopRite next door . There was actually another centennial in Middletown, this one right in downtown at 125 North Street . It's no longer a grocery store, but right next door is an indie called Garcia's Market. Red Berry Farm is mostly a produce market -- and a very extensive one at that -- but there are also a few groceries and a deli and seafood counter in the back. It's a very attractive little store with a lot of nic...

Snapshot: ALDI - Middletown, NY

ALDI Opened: before 2008 Previous Tenants:  unknown Location:  341 NY-211, Middletown, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Just across the street from yesterday's ShopRite -- and in the same strip mall as the original Middletown ShopRite -- is this roughly 14,000 square foot ALDI. Inside, the store has updated decor but older flooring . I don't know when the store opened, but it was definitely before 2008. That's all for this store, and tomorrow, we're headed next door to a smaller independent on The Independent Edition !

TOUR: ShopRite - Wallkill, Middletown, NY

ShopRite of Wallkill Owner: SRS Opened:  2007 Previous Tenants:  Stop & Shop (2001-2007) Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  20 Lloyds Ln, Middletown, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 And here is the final stop on our history of this Wallkill ShopRite! Worth noting, too, that Middletown has a second ShopRite across town. To recap, Big V opened up shop near here in the 1950s, then moved in the 1970s to a larger location , which was then taken over by SRS (ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., the corporate Wakefern-owned division) in 2001. SRS then built a new massive 85,000 square foot store around 2005, but never opened there as in 2007 they instead moved into a closed Stop & Shop just across the street from the original 1950s store. And aside from a coat of paint, the exterior of this 60,000 square foot store looks almost exactly like it did when it was a Stop & Shop, right down to the department names across the front of the store. The faca...

Special Report: Morton Williams - Upper West Side, Manhattan, NY

Morton Williams Fresh Marketplace Owner: Morton Sloan Opened:  January 26, 2024 Previous Tenants:  non-grocery tenants Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  2015 Broadway, Upper West Side, Manhattan, NY Photographed:  January 26, 2024 Welcome to the newest Morton Williams! This store opened just this morning on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, on Broadway between 68th and 69th Streets. It’s the latest opening for Allegiance, which has also recently opened a store in Bloomingdale, NJ , and two Foodtowns in Brooklyn — more on those soon. In advance, please forgive any formatting issues on this post, as I’m actually writing it on my phone from a Starbucks a few blocks away. I’m hoping to update this post tonight or tomorrow with progress photos from the construction and fix any formatting issues. But for now, our tour! Although I’m not sure, I’d estimate that the store is around 12,000 square feet. It’s an unusual layout, as with many Morton William...
