Port Jervis these days has only one supermarket, a Save-A-Lot in a strip mall downtown. We'll check out that store tomorrow, but here's a look at another former supermarket just down the street from yesterday's. This 15,800 square foot A&P Centennial was expanded later to its present 25,000 square feet, but I'm not sure whether A&P did the expansion or not because I'm not clear on when the A&P closed. We do know, though, that it opened between 1957 and 1963 based on aerials. I also unfortunately don't know what occupied the space when A&P closed, but it later was subdivided with Save-A-Lot taking the largest spot. Save-A-Lot closed in 2008 but later reopened, then closed again between 2015 and 2018.
There was a gap between this Save-A-Lot's closing and the new store's opening, and they appear to be under different ownership. When the Save-A-Lot closed here, an independent store called Port Jervis Market Place opened but closed very shortly thereafter in the 7700 square foot space.
The expansion on the left side of the building is now a Family Dollar and the Save-A-Lot space is now a Dollar Tree. The former Grand Union up the street is now a Dollar General.
And this cool Erie caboose -- even better with the snow on it -- is in the parking lot just next to the building! That's all for this stop, and tomorrow we move along to the current Save-A-Lot in the middle of town on The Market Report!

  1. Knowing Upstate NY and A&P, there's a good chance this store closed no later than 1981. A lot of upstate stores closed between about 1975 and 1981.
