Opened: 1990s
Closed: 2007
Later Tenants: Big Lots
Photographed: February 3, 2021This 50,000 square foot supermarket was built in the 1990s as a Big V-owned ShopRite, relocating from a beautiful store of half that size down the street. In 2001, ownership was transferred to SRS when Big V went bankrupt. This store was relatively short-lived, having closed in 2007 when ShopRite moved into a former Stop & Shop, directly across the street from their old location. On Flickr, Jack Thomas captured this store several times in its history, including with its original facade and after a renovation. Also of note is that a location was built to replace this store, but when Stop & Shop closed very close to this store, ShopRite moved there instead. The almost-ShopRite -- of 85,000 square feet -- is now partially a Planet Fitness. (He also has a huge library of retail pictures in this area over many years.) After the weekend, we're going to check out ShopRite's third location around here, the one they currently operate, on Monday on The Market Report!
You have to wonder what kind of incentives they got to move into the former Stop & Shop instead of the purpose-built location they had under construction. I find it hard to believe they would otherwise bail on a new building just because a vacancy popped up.
ReplyDeleteThat's weird ShopRite would go through the trouble of building a new store from scratch to their specifications, get the new store mostly built, then choose to relocate to an old Stop & Shop instead. That's a lot of money to waste on a building that was never used.
ReplyDeleteI suspect it was also (or mostly) to keep another competitor out. By moving into this store and holding onto the property or lease on the other, they can control who else moves into the area. On the other hand, I don't see why they couldn't have bought the Stop & Shop and sublet that, while moving into the location they built for themselves.
DeleteThe purchase of Stop & Shop was part of a larger acquisition. ShopRite purchased the Middletown store in addition to like 7 or 8 stores in South NJ.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for adding that!
