Welcome to the Save-A-Lot at Pike Plaza in downtown Port Jervis! We saw the older Save-A-Lot in town yesterday, but that store closed before this one opened in 2018 and there was a gap between the two stores. This store is larger than the old one, in the 15-20,000 square foot range, while the Jersey Avenue location was 7700 square feet. The building was part of the original Pike Plaza strip, which included WT Grant and ACME, with the ACME in this space.
We enter on the left side of the store with baked goods and produce in the first aisle. Meat, deli items, and dairy are on the back wall, with the rest of dairy and frozen on the right side. It's a very no-frills supermarket but it's clean and more modern than many Save-A-Lots I've been to.
We've seen this decor package before, although it looks like that one had beige and red walls while this one has white walls. Looks like it's just slight variations on the same decor package.
This is definitely one of the better-run Save-A-Lots I've been to, although even a well-run one is still not as good as a mainstream supermarket. But Pike Plaza previously had another supermarket, which we're going to take a look at tomorrow on Grocery Archaeology!

  1. The former W.T. Grant/Kmart space next door became Great American after Kmart left, closing in 1999.

    1. Gee - seems I've heard THAT name before, though this may be one of the more Southern spots they were in, given that you can't go too much more south and stay in NY State ;)

    2. Yes! And I know you saw, but here's my post on that spot: https://groceryarchaeology.marketreportblog.com/2024/01/100-pike-st-port-jervis-ny.html

You're right, I don't think there were many if any Great American stores in NY -- what was their presence in the lower Hudson Valley and Rockland/Westchester areas? To my knowledge, virtually none.

    3. Great American was definitely in NY (I wasn't ure if they ever went beyond the state).

Not so sure they ever got over into the Hudson Valley or areas you mention, but there were a number of them as you head north from this area into the Catskills and even up towards the US 20 corridor west of Albany.

In addition, they took over and ran some of the original Albany area ShopRite locations for a couple years when Big V closed those.

As far as I know, the last remaining store using the name is in Prattsville in the Catskills.

    4. Whoops, definitely meant to say something else, sorry. I don't remember what I was going for but of course there were Great American stores in NY. Thanks for sharing those links!
