Photographed: June 2, 2021Welcome back to the former Stop & Shop of Pomona, NY! The 51,000 square foot store was built around 1978 as a Grand Union as a much smaller building, then renovated and expanded by Grand Union in the late 1990s. Stop & Shop acquired the location in 2001 at the time of Grand Union's bankruptcy, then closed in August 2020. We saw the store still open in 2020, too.I revisited over the summer of 2021 after the Stop & Shop had closed and the new tenant, Evergreen, a kosher supermarket, was preparing to move in. As I've said, there is a large (and growing) Orthodox Jewish population in Rockland County and much of this part of the state, making it harder and harder for traditional supermarkets like this Stop & Shop to survive. There's a ShopRite in Garnerville, but that's a good two miles away. There's also a ShopRite (recently announced to be undergoing a major renovation and expansion) and a DeCicco Family Markets in New City, about four miles southeast. We'll be seeing the Garnerville ShopRite tomorrow.
We can clearly see the Stop & Shop labelscars here, but unfortunately I can't make out any Grand Union labelscars. I was hoping to be able to see something like that when the Stop & Shop sign came down.
Inside, renovation was already progressing significantly by the time of my visit. Evergreen built out some storefronts along the front to lease to other businesses, including a kitchenwares store, a toy store, and a pharmacy.
My pictures here are not great because the windows were both very dirty from construction and mostly covered by paper, but we can still get a little glimpse inside the store under construction.
You can see where the wall divides the outside stores from the supermarket in the back.
The Stop & Shop also had a pharmacy, whose records were transferred to a nearby Walgreens...
Evergreen Uptown, as it's called (a reference to their other location to the south in Monsey), opened in March of 2022, and it's a beautiful store. Take a tour here! And tomorrow, we're headed to Garnerville!
Being you suggested it was redone in the late 1990's as Grand Union, it's quite likely that Stop & Shop also redid (or at least repainted) that front afterwards.
ReplyDeleteOnly since the few later Grand Union stores I know of (including our local one here in Valatie) were done in a color scheme of white background and green trim, unlike this one with the brownish background and red trim.
Thus, Stop & Shop may have painted over and that would explain not being able to see any remnant of the GU logos etc.
