Welcome to the ShopRite of Stony Point! The 70,000 square foot store was built in 2010 just up the street from where Inserra Supermarkets had owned a ShopRite for around 25 years, but closed in 2005. This store was built just behind a former Grand Union of half its size, part of which is now an ALDI.
This is one of the nicer Inserra stores I've been to, and I think even though the decor is going on 15 years old at this point it still looks really good. For the most part, too, the store has been maintained exceptionally well (with a few exceptions) -- a big difference from nearby Garnerville, which opened as a ShopRite just five years before this one.
The grand aisle is on the left side of the store, with bakery in the front left corner and deli and seafood on the left side wall. Meats are on the back wall, and frozen/dairy are on the right side. One example of perhaps Inserra being a bit ambitious is the Avenue Bean coffee shop, which appears to have been long since closed (although perhaps that was a coronavirus-related decision?).
The bakery, though, looks great at the front of the grand aisle. This decor is colorful and fun without being overwhelming or too busy. It's very well-designed, and as we can see, it's been maintained well here.
The deli and cheese areas are up next along the side wall, and unlike Garnerville, this store has a large service seafood counter...
The produce department is in the middle and right side of the grand aisle. I think it goes without saying that when Inserra opened this store, it doesn't look like any fixtures or decor were secondhand.
Produce extends onto the back wall with some things like salad dressings and juices, then the cases transition into meat across the back of the store.
The grocery aisles are clean, spacious, and bright. A big difference from the claustrophobic, dim Stop & Shop nearby!
Another closed service department is the pharmacy -- a few years ago, Inserra closed all of its pharmacies. But like the coffee shop, the space remains vacant with sale items in front of it. It's disappointing, as I would expect better from Inserra, even if it's simply moving some of the HABA shelving into the area. At least the signage has been removed. This faces the front-end.
HABA lines the outside of the pharmacy department and continues into the rest of the store. This makes for a somewhat awkward layout, as you have protein shakes opposite canned vegetables, and rice pilaf next to that on the back of the pharmacy room...
Notice that it would be hard to remove this island altogether, since customer service is also located here and there are offices on the second floor.
Aisle 12 has HABA, extending from the back of the former pharmacy department.
This store has a rather deluxe version of this decor package. I've seen it done in a much simpler version that doesn't look as good. The Jersey City location -- one of my least favorite ShopRites ever, although thankfully it's soon to be replaced -- has a somewhat depressing scaled-down version of the decor.
Part of what makes the decor work here is that the building itself is large, spacious, and attractive, and the skylights are great. Practically any decor would look good here.
Dairy begins on the back wall next to the meat department, then continues down the outside of the store.
And from there, we enter an alcove in the front with frozen foods. I've included this shot here so you can get a sense of what we're looking at. The dairy aisle is visible at the far end of the below picture, with frozen foods in an alcove on the front wall to the right.
There's also frozen foods in the second-to-last aisle of the store...
...and then the rest, including ice cream, is in the front corner of the store.
The front-end look great too, with a high drop ceiling and large windows.
And don't forget to see the ALDI nearby here. That not only wraps up Stony Point, but our look at Rockland County! Don't worry, though, I'll be back for more soon enough. Up next, we're headed across the Hudson for a look at Westchester County!
