Small town in Massachusetts? That means it's time for a small independent grocer! We're here to check out Micknuck's Fresh Marketplace in Fiskdale, to the west of Sturbridge, MA. It's owned by the owners of a larger independent supermarket in Southbridge, which is to the east of Sturbridge. Micknuck's is just 6,000 square feet, so it's not a full supermarket, but it has produce, dairy, deli, bakery, meat, and seafood, definitely focused on the fresh foods.
You enter in the middle of the store and can turn right to enter the produce and dairy departments which are in the right side of the small store. A grocery aisle or two are at the back of the store, and on the left side, deli, bakery, butcher, and seafood counters line the walls.
You can see it's an extremely small place and yet has quite a bit to choose from, especially in terms of perishables. People who are looking for a full supermarket are likely going to a Stop & Shop or Shaw's in Sturbridge, and possibly out to Big Bunny Market -- owned by the same people as Micknuck's -- in Southbridge.
On Monday, we're headed into Sturbridge to check out a building that I suspect was a supermarket previously!
Must be a small town, when you put up a name and I say "hm, never heard of that one ;). Not to say I've been to all of MA, just most of it at some time over the years, so I probably know most of the names (or have at least heard of ones I haven't been to, like many of those on Cape Cod).
ReplyDeleteFor sure! I do think I cheated though because Fiskdale is not technically a town, just a place within Sturbridge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiskdale,_Massachusetts But I'm gonna put that theory to the test with some of the places I've photographed that I'll be posting!
DeleteMight be one of those things that vary with MA being a commonwealth vs. a state.
DeleteThinking that here in NY it would likely be under the label hamlet.
But then again, even in NY this happens occasionally - usually watching the weather when there are severe thunderstorm etc. alerts this time of year, and they'll give a list of places the storm is tracking towards. Often manages to be one that makes one go huh?
