Sturbridge has two supermarkets, a Shaw's and this Stop & Shop, which I suspect may have moved from a spot just up the street from here. It was constructed between 1998 and 2001 according to Historic Aerials, and has a pretty typical Super Stop & Shop layout. I don't know what decor packages this store has had over the years, but around 2015-18, it was renovated to a pretty no-frills version of the decor package it currently has.
The grand aisle is on the right side of the store, with natural foods in the front right corner and deli lining the right side of the grand aisle. Produce is on the left. Meat and seafood line the back wall, with dairy and frozen on the left side. Bakery is in the front left corner. I don't believe there's a pharmacy here.
The natural foods department here is quite extensive, with several aisles and a large frozen department in the front corner. Stop & Shop has been taking out the natural foods departments in newer remodels, so I don't know if it's still here.
The deli department is on the back part of the grand aisle. While I actually really like this decor package, it doesn't look good in this part of the store because it's so minimal and dark.
Eventually, Stop & Shop started designing these Super Stop & Shop stores with higher ceilings.
Above, we're looking back up towards the front of the grand aisle, and below, a look at the back wall...
The decor looks better in the higher-ceiling area, but still, it's too dim. Compare this to a beautiful version of the same decor in Pequannock.
The grocery aisles are clean and orderly. There's not a whole lot to say about the grocery aisles here, although it looks like there may be a closed pharmacy in the front here. But I don't think there was ever a pharmacy here.
Dairy begins in the back left corner of the store, then continues down the last aisle.
Here we see an example of the decor looking a little better than it did back in the grand aisle. The freezer cases also look newer here than in the rest of the store.
The bakery department is in the front left corner. I always thought this is a normal place for the bakery, but the angled drop ceiling here doesn't lend itself to great decor. Why was this drop ceiling such a common addition to this era of Stop & Shop?
And a look across the front-end...
We're to the north of Sturbridge, and tomorrow we'll be seeing a store that's just to the east of town!
