TOUR: Stop & Shop - Grafton, MA

Stop & Shop
Opened: between 1997 and 2001
Previous Tenants: none
Location: 100 Worcester Rd, Grafton, MA
Photographed: May 9, 2021
It was the Grafton Flea Market, not the Stop & Shop, that drew me to town, but as long as we're here let's check out Grafton's only supermarket! (It's important to note that this is the Stop & Shop on Worcester Road in Grafton, not the Stop & Shop on Grafton Street in Worcester. We'll get there, don't worry.)
The roughly 60,000 square foot store dates back to the late 1990s, when it was a new-build store, though it replaced an older strip mall that was closer to the road (it appears to have been a department store, a supermarket, and a smaller business).
Today, the store is clean and pleasant, though not particularly memorable. It's a standard Super Stop & Shop layout, with the grand aisle on the right side. Natural foods are in the front right corner, with prepared foods and deli on the right side facing produce on the left side. Seafood and meat line the back wall with HABA, frozen, and dairy on the far left side. Bakery is in the front left corner. It doesn't look like this store ever had a pharmacy, but there's a CVS in an outparcel of this mall.
I really like the wood-texture flooring in the natural foods department. This is the nicest part of the store. The rest is very straightforward, and very familiar to anyone who knows Stop & Shop...
I like the tile backsplash on the seafood department!
This store seems to have a lower ceiling than others of a similar vintage, although the later Super Stop & Shops had much higher ceilings.
At 60,000 square feet, this feels large enough but not too large. Some of the massive stores Stop & Shop built in the early 2000s are way too big for them to even fill with merchandise.
Although Stop & Shop has been renovating many of their stores lately, I don't believe this or any of the stores within Worcester have gotten any remodels since the logo was changed in 2018. All of them still have some form of the "fruitbowl" or "fruit slice" decor -- and some have even older decor, which we'll see. By my count, if you look at all Stop & Shop stores in the immediate Framingham area and west, only four of the 33 locations have been remodeled since 2018. We'll see if the new strategy for the chain involves remodeling those locations or closing them -- or, as I suspect, a combination of both.
The meat department transitions to dairy on the left side of the back of the store.
Looking back in the other direction...
Frozen foods are in the last few aisles.
In a slightly unusual setup, dairy is exclusively on the back wall while the last two aisles are all frozen foods. It's more common to see the outside of the last aisle with dairy.
In the front of the store is the bakery department. It looks like Stop & Shop has cut most of the store-baked products, although some of the items are still baked in-store. But it seems to me a higher proportion of the baked goods come in from elsewhere compared to other chain supermarkets.
And looking across the front-end...
Notice another slight layout quirk, which is that packaged bread is in this area around the corner from bakery. Typically, this area would be the pharmacy, but this store doesn't have a pharmacy. Tomorrow we have something very different, a former grocery store in South Grafton!

  1. Makes sense not to have the pharmacy if there is a CVS (which may, or may not, have been within the plaza at one time, as they often were before moving to freestanding storefronts).

As to the remodeling or closing, the sensible way would be to figure out what stores should be closed in an area, give the other store(s) a remodel then when that is finishing up, announce the closing of the unremodeled store.

That way, customers have the option of going to the store that will eventually close while the other one nearby is getting renovated, to avoid having to shop around the work in progress, and then the focus on the grand reopening can take the attention off the closing of the other store.

Of course, since that makes sense, it's probably exactly what they WON'T do ;)

    1. Good point about the CVS possibly having been in the strip mall originally. And I like your plan! That sounds more logical, and more strategic, than what we're actually seeing with Stop & Shop.

    2. Definitely, especially in some areas (such as that triangle of stores in NJ on Inman, Route 1 and Piscataway, where they are basically leaving that whole area while keeping others with multiple stores vs. just closing some in an area and getting all the customers to go to another nearishby one).

  2. I'm loving your Stop & Shop coverage! (Shaw's too!!) Always wanting to comment but never finding the time. Have some random thoughts on this place that I can't let pass by.

First off, judging from your pictures, this seems to be an incredibly nice Stop & Shop. I even like the décor here which I usually hate. The lower ceiling really helps this package look better. In the warehouse style stores, the décor looks so lame on the walls and leaves huge portions with absolutely no visual interest. The black and white signs in produce bring a very nice contrast. I thought they looked great when S&S put them in stores although I believe they have been phased out now.

The Nature's Promise department looks great! The floor is really nice, as you mentioned. I am perpetually torn as to whether or not I like a separate better-for-you department or if I like the products in the regular mix around the store. Funny story... last summer I was in a Stop and Shop with a friend and I wanted organic oatmeal. Went to the health section and could only find pricey brands, no Nature's Promise which I wanted. After we checked out, I mentioned to my friend that I was surprised they didn't have Nature's Promise oatmeal. She said they do, it's with the regular oatmeal! Well that's confusing. I was not a seasoned Stop and Shop shopper at the time and still am not but at least I know for next time!

Nice to see a full-service seafood counter! Is the wave tile from an older décor package?

I noticed recently that Stop & Shop has switched to "SALE" signage rather than "Bonus Buy" signage which of course is from the far superior chain, Giant of PA.

I always feel so disoriented in a S&S when frozen is in the last aisle with Dairy along the back of the store. Makes no sense to my brain!

The Bakery. So much going on here. Yes, I too have noticed S&S has virtually stopped baking anything in-store. It’s too bad. Can’t even get a loose roll or bagel anymore. They had such a great fresh bread section when they upgraded stores to the gray cases, but that has all disappeared. What I will say, the new bakery packaging is a knock-out! Black labels with the stop light logo. Just fantastic. Such a shame the own-brand products can’t share the same great packaging buy as we know they have to be put in all the other banners so we’re stuck with the nonsensical fruit bowl logo/packaging.

The front-end looks great! Love the natural light that floods in the windows and the mirrored windows of the second floor offices keep that whole are looking very sleek.

I would really doubt that this store is on any remodel list since it looks really great as-is! A Stop & Shop that I like? Huh. Didn’t see that coming. ;) Now if I can just get their app to work!

    1. Holy cow, an Acme Style sighting! ;)

You're right about Giant being the superior chain. I'd love for them to be in South Jersey. Their stores, in my opinion, are better than ShopRite and ACME. Especially the remodeled/new ones.

    2. It's true! And you might just be seeing me around a bit more.
PS: The blog is back online. Still closed but restored for viewing purposes.

I lived in PA in the 90's and was a loyal Giant shopper. They were great back then and still are today. I don't think there is another chain out there that remodels their stores so aggressively. Even back in the 90's, stores were constantly being expanded and remodeled, sometimes with the same décor package just kicked up a notch or two. I was in a remodeled Giant back in May. The store was spectacular. Everything replaced... floors, cases, registers and I believe even the lighting was all new. Unlike other chains, they just seem to have a bottomless budget for remodels.

    3. The store at 23rd And Arch in Philly is beautiful. It's close enough that I would make it a regular stop, but the $5 (soon to be $6) toll makes that prohibitive.

    4. Acme Style - agreed! This is a very nice store and it seems to be maintained really well. And agreed on the natural foods department, too! As for the seafood tile, yes, it's from the Super Stop & Shop decor that this store would've opened with (see Watchung: https://www.marketreportblog.com/2021/11/tour-stop-shop-watchung-nj.html). And I agree with your assessment of the bakery, too -- definitely better branding and packaging but an inferior product.

Mike - agreed about Giant, too. I've always been happy with the Giant locations I've been to in PA. And I'll have to go and check out that Philadelphia store. I haven't been to Philadelphia (with time to visit a lot of supermarkets) in quite some time. It's on my list!
