Welcome back to the Extra Supermarket in downtown East Orange! What we're seeing above is the entrance and exit facing the parking lot, which is definitely not the more beautiful side. The store's main side faces out to Central Avenue, but the main entrance and exit are in the back facing the parking lot. The exterior has gotten a new paint job, but the inside has gotten a little more work. (According to a response to a Google review, Extra is also preparing to renovate the exterior of the store.) Here's my original tour of the store a few years ago.
The majority of the store hasn't really changed, but it's gotten some nice upgrades with a new floor, new lighting, and new aisle markers. There's not really any decor in the store, and I'm not sure if there will eventually be department signage installed or if this is it.
Other things, like the fixtures, haven't changed. These produce tables are aging, but in good shape and nice and clean.
The layout, of course, hasn't changed at all. It does feel brighter and a bit more modern than it did, which is a good improvement. The building is old, dating back possibly as far as the 1940s (I believe it was originally a Good Deal supermarket, and then later a Village Super Market-owned ShopRite). It's been expanded a few times to its present 13,000 square feet.
Here's a "before" shot of the same area. You can see it's been fixed up but mostly hasn't changed.
The grocery aisles are clean and fully stocked, with a lot packed into the small area.
Here's a look at the grocery aisles before the remodel. Notice that they previously had only one set of aisle markers in the middle of the aisle, and now they have one in the front and one in the back.
Extra is also preparing another store in East Orange, in a former Rite Aid a mile east on Central Avenue. Half a mile north of that store, a former Western Beef was slated to reopen as a Food Depot (owned by the same people as Extra), but that project was canceled and it's now a construction supply warehouse.
The absurdly-narrow frozen foods aisle runs along the front wall of the store.
And a look across the front-end, which runs along the side wall (which faces Sanford Street).
That's all for this Extra, and I'll be back to see if the outside is redone at any point. For now, we have a few more stores to see today, and tomorrow we'll check out more Stop & Shops!
