Welcome back to Georgetown! This southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood abuts the Jamaica Bay and Paerdegat Basin, across which is Canarsie where we recently saw a CTown in progress. This Key Food, which is just under 20,000 square feet, is one of several supermarkets along Ralph Avenue -- others include Food Way and Foodtown, plus a Caribbean market a block west called The Yellow Market. We first toured this store in 2020, and since then, it looks like the store has changed ownership or at least management.
And along with that, it's been receiving a renovation. While many of the fixtures remain the same, it's been cleaned up quite a bit and the fixtures that have been replaced look good.
If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure the produce department has been extended farther into the store. You can see in the older pictures that it appears there was previously only one row of produce rather than the multiple smaller bins and tables there are now.
Since the remodel is still very much in progress, I wonder how many of these fixtures are still to be replaced. Possibly not many, since it seems illogical to install a new floor before replacing the fixtures. Then again, I've seen weirder things happening in New York City supermarkets.
New aisle markers and grocery shelving, but notice that those columns still have the blue paint from before the renovation.
We see evidence of work still ongoing in the back corner of the store, where the former deli department is being redone to install a new seafood department. This is all new, with new ceiling, tile, prep areas, flooring, and fixtures. The deli has been moved to the front-left corner, which previously had bread shelving. There are no other service departments in the store.
Dairy in the second-to-last grocery aisle, and it looks like there's still some work going on here too, with the old lighting still in place and several ceiling tiles missing. The ceiling is new, but not yet complete.
Frozen foods are in the last aisle.
And here's the new deli in the front corner next to the registers. I'm thinking that, although the whole deli prep area is newly built out, the deli case is the same fixture that was in the back of the store.
Here's a look across the front-end...
Outside the store, the facade has gotten a fresh coat of paint but more notably, they very old Key Food Plaza sign out on Ralph Avenue has gotten some new letters! Both sides now spell out Key Food, rather than the previous Key Fod.
Glad to see this aging store getting some nice investment! I'll be back at some point to check out the changes once they're all done. Here's today's other posts!
