Shrewsbury and some of the other suburbs between Worcester and Boston have growing Indian populations, so it's no surprise that Indian grocers have opened up to serve that community. Here in Shrewsbury, Patel Brothers is the smaller of two Indian supermarkets, clocking in at around 14,000 square feet.Photographed: October 23, 2021
The store opened around 2012, combining a few formerly separate storefronts (or so it looks to me). Inside, the interior is very typical of a Patel Brothers, with the produce department on the left side of the store taking up the first two and a half aisles. Five grocery aisles are on the right side of the store, with dairy in the second-to-last aisle and frozen in the last one. What I would consider to be the last aisle is here labeled aisle 1, with the first produce aisle being aisle 7.
The store is clean and well-appointed for its size, and I always like this style of shelving, which I think makes the store look sleek.
Here we can see some of the dairy department in the second-to-last aisle.
An unusual find in nonfoods here: a few paper and cleaning-type products are sourced from Krasdale Foods. I've never seen that in other Patel Brothers. Maybe it was just a temporary thing.
And frozen foods in the last aisle. As we see, the store isn't that large, but it's well-stocked and it feels plenty spacious.
That's all for this Patel Brothers, and by the way there's now a halal butcher/grocer next door called Best Meat House. And tomorrow, we're headed directly across the street to check out a much larger mainstream supermarket!
