City Supermarkets
Opened: summer 2024
We're going to tour the location from the back entrance facing the parking lot. The layout hasn't changed much, but basically all of the fixtures have been replaced. In the back, the produce department takes up the space it always has but also the former meat case facing the department, which you can see straight ahead above. The refrigerator running along the side to the left has refrigerated produce and single-serve beverages, and an expanded deli case on the right side has prepared foods, baked goods, and cheeses. A tiny deli counter is in the back corner of the store. The meat department and dairy department now run along the side wall that used to be dairy and frozen, with frozen and dairy in the first aisle on the front wall.
I love the look of the new store. Obviously, the flooring hasn't been done yet and what we're looking at is just subfloor. Still, it looks great.
City is clearly working hard to make the store a full supermarket. In its later years, Kenilworth Fresh Market became more of an oversized convenience store.
Here's a look at the deli counter and baked goods in the back corner of the store. I'm a big fan of the decor because it's attractive without being overwhelming in the small, low space.
City has also removed the single conveyor-belt register on the side wall of the store, opting instead to extend the grocery aisles and send all purchases through the counter.
Above, we're looking towards the back of the store. You can see the rear entrance and exit.
A fully-stocked meat case with a bright new sign is opposite the checkout, on the other side of the store. I couldn't tell for sure, but it looks like they are cutting meat in-store. It's possible it's brought in from another location, but I don't believe so. Irvington is about four miles away.
The grocery shelving has been replaced, too, and is now much higher and more full than previously.
Here's a look at the side wall with dairy and meat. Again, you can see the flooring is still in progress, but much of the rest of the store is done and looking great.
Dairy and frozen in the last aisle, or first aisle depending on your perspective, running along the front of the store.

We're back at Kenilworth's tiny supermarket to check out their renovation! Earlier this summer, I reported that the Kenilworth Fresh Market had been acquired by local chain City Supermarket, becoming their fifth store. They reset the store when they moved in, but now they're working hard on a full renovation to the tiny 5300 square foot store.Previous Tenants: Associated Supermarkets > ExpresSupermarket > Kenilworth Fresh Market
Cooperative: Retail Grocers Group
Location: 488 Kenilworth Blvd, Kenilworth, NJ

This store is looking great and I'm excited to see how it all turns out! For now, check out these other stores this weekend:
- Renovations progress at the Carlstadt Food Bazaar while the Piscataway location has yet to start
- City Supermarkets is almost done renovating their new location in Kenilworth (this post)
- Most closed Stop & Shop stores remain vacant, including a location in Edison
- An independent grocer near Paterson has completed a renovation
- Over in Passaic, the exterior of a SuperFresh is getting a major rebuild
