In Saddle Brook, today we see a store that received a renovation that wasn't nearly as extensive as it could've (or maybe should've) been. Here in Rochelle Park, we see a completely different story -- this clearly very high-volume ShopRite has completed a beautiful renovation that has made the whole store feel much more modern than it is.
Originating in 1955 as just a fraction of its current size over 80,000 square feet, the ShopRite of Rochelle Park was the original Glass Gardens store. Today, Glass Gardens owns ShopRite stores in Pearl River, Brooklyn, Queens, Linden, Perth Amboy, Englewood, Paramus, Rockaway, and Wharton along with this store. I most recently posted this store almost done in June, but we're back to see the great work they've done storewide.
We've already seen this expansion, which was added on to the right side of the store in this renovation. But when I was here in June, the rest of the store wasn't done yet.
Here's a look at where the new expansion joins the original store. Obviously, it's not seamless, but it's pretty impressive.
On the whole, the store looks great especially given its history and age. While the rest of the store doesn't exactly look like a brand-new supermarket, it does look very fresh and clean.
Other ShopRites are currently getting renovations in Philadelphia and Nutley, although I haven't been to either store to see the renovation in progress. That Front & Olney store, which I visited in 2021, looked good but just a tiny bit dated. The Nutley store has been kept up very well over the years, but like this one, it's a 1950s-era store that's been expanded from its original 8000 square feet or so to its present 51,000.
New decor is up throughout the store and it looks like the flooring has been redone across the whole store, too. Now this is a serious renovation.
Here in the seafood department, for instance, you can tell it's not 100% brand new, but it may as well be. All the fixtures, decor, flooring, and ceiling are new, so it doesn't show its age. Here's what the seafood department used to look like.
Over in the meat department, it doesn't look like all the fixtures are brand-new, but they've been either painted or cleaned very well. They might be new, too.
Dairy and frozen at the end of the store also looking modern and clean, though the fixtures were replaced shortly before this renovation.
And I'm really liking this new decor. As I mentioned in past Glass Gardens renovations, sometimes they tend to be a bit monotone, but I don't mind all the gray in this one.
And over in the front corner, the former bakery department has been all but completely disguised with new freezer cases and some grocery shelving in this corner. The flooring was replaced here.
This wall below used to be the bakery department. You'd never know! A prep area still exists behind this row of freezers, but today, it's used for online ordering staging.
The low ceiling and awkward posts betray the store's true age, but this renovation looks great and it's, as far as I can tell, the functional equivalent of a brand-new store. You can see how extensive the work was, even if many of the departments didn't even move that much.
There's a lot more to see this weekend! Check it all out here...
