Pioneer Supermarkets
Everyone knows Little Italy in Manhattan, but less-known is the Bronx's Little Italy, located along Arthur Avenue in the Belmont section. We're in the middle of the Bronx here, about half a mile south of Fordham University, or for non-New Yorkers, about eight and a half miles northeast of Times Square. Here at Arthur Avenue and East 183rd Street, a former Rite Aid opened today as a brand-new Pioneer Supermarket. I visited on Friday, mistakenly thinking the store had already opened. The door was open as they were bringing in last-minute merchandise, and I saw inside the store. It'll be quite nice, from what I could see.
Anyone familiar with supermarkets will recognize that this building, although previously a Rite Aid, started life as an A&P. It appears to have been built in the early 1950s or before, but then expanded in the late 1960s. It's also possible the original building was demolished and rebuilt.
