I don't usually write about small corner grocers or delis, but Kate's Corner here in South Chelmsford is too important to pass up. The 1600 square foot store, built into a house, goes as far back as 1824 when it first opened as a general store. It's continuously operated as a grocery store since then for over 200 years. I won't attempt to describe the history any further than that, since you can read a much more extensive background, see lots more pictures, and even see a timeline of the store's background on this post from the Chelmsford Historical Society. Chelmsford is part quaint small New England town and part suburb, as it's immediately outside the city of Lowell, and the rural surroundings of this store belie the city of 115,000 just five miles north. We'll be spending a few days here in Chelmsford and then move over to Lowell. So for now, we're off to downtown Chelmsford for a small grocer and a former supermarket!

Also, don't forget to check out all of this weekend's posts, including some new stores, closings, and a big price comparison at 30 stores!
