It's time for our first store here in Brockton! As I mentioned on the preview post yesterday, one of the two chains that merged to become today's Shaw's was from here in Brockton, and was originally Brockton Public Market, later BPM Grocers. There are two Shaw's in Brockton, but there was another here in the far southern end of town until 2009.
This store is right on the Brockton-West Bridgewater border, and in fact the town line runs right through this building. According to Google Maps, the right 2/3 or so of the former Shaw's building is in Brockton, and the left -- starting about where the triangle on the left is -- is in West Bridgewater. This store looks a lot like the early-00s models such as Webster (also closed) or Groton or Webster Square, but it actually dates back to the 1960s (when it was much smaller) and was renovated and expanded around the early 00s. The space, after its 2009 closure, has been subdivided and is now in part a trampoline park. There's a Trucchi's and a Market Basket about two miles south in West Bridgewater, along with a smaller America's Food Basket just about half a mile north.
The retail strips here are rather desolate, and a large vacant Kmart just next door (but in a separate strip mall) has been sitting empty since its closure in 2019.
When I visited in late 2022, the Kmart was still very much a Kmart even though it had been closed for several years. The space is still vacant, but I don't know if anything has changed like the signage being removed.
Brockton, a lower-income city, has seen a lot of big-box retail closures, including two Stop & Shops in the last five years. Still, there are more supermarkets across the city that we'll be touring over the next few weeks. Tomorrow we'll be taking a look at the America's Food Basket just north!
