It's time to return to the Main & Cambridge Price Chopper, which
closed at the end of January. The massive, 70,000 square foot store was built from the ground up in 2003, replacing an
older store just north.
The space remains vacant with several Price Chopper remnants around the property, although the signage has all been removed from the building itself.
But Price Chopper banners remain in the parking lot, as do the cart corrals. Price Chopper said at the time of closure that they were looking for someone to sublet from them for the last several years on their lease -- nobody seems interested yet, although as I no longer live in Worcester I don't have my ear to the ground the way I used to -- and, as a result, it seems like everything has been left completely as-is.
The Price Chopper sign out on Cambridge Street has just been turned around, but it's still fairly readable...
At least when I visited about a month ago, the store still looked like it had very recently closed. In fact, basically the whole building was in the condition it would've been in the day after its closure.
Looking inside, we see certain furniture had been removed but that all of the fixtures and refrigeration was still there. It was tougher to see inside the store towards the grocery aisles, but it seemed like all the fixtures had been left completely. I assume that would be to facilitate a new tenant coming in and subletting the space, but as I mentioned
on my previous post, I doubt there's another operator who wants to come in and reopen the supermarket as it was. My guess is a new operator would change the store in some way -- make it smaller, possibly, or else renovate it all anyway.
We'll see if a new supermarket (or some other business) comes in here, but in the meantime, here's a look at the other stores we're seeing this weekend!
