Pioneer Supermarkets
Opened: December 8, 2024Back in December, I made a mistake. I went to this Pioneer Supermarket on December 6. Unfortunately, it didn't open until December 8, and I didn't know that until I arrived and found the store with its doors and windows closed and covered. Regardless, I still reported that the store would open soon! It's been a few months, but now I've finally gotten back to check it out.
I must say, I love the exterior. As I mentioned on that post, this space was originally an A&P, and you can tell because of the distinctive facade. But it spent the last several years as a Rite Aid that closed in 2023. The Pioneer owners completely remodeled the interior to be a brand-new supermarket, and a really nice one at that. There's an expansive selection packed into the 12,000 square foot store.
Produce is on the right side of the store in the first aisle, with meats and cold cuts on the back wall. Dairy and frozen are on the left side in the last aisle, with deli/bakery in the front-left corner. No in-store bakery, of course, but plenty of local Italian breads.
I really love the design of this store, and even several months into its life, it's looking all but brand-new (and that includes stocking and cleanliness). Something that strikes me about these former Rite Aid supermarkets, especially those that I posted today, is that they don't at all look like converted drugstores inside. They look like brand-new supermarkets, that were specifically designed to be supermarkets.
An unfortunate blurry picture of the meat department at the back, but it gets better. I included it just to show the decor, which I love. It's simple and thoughtfully designed. Modern but not too trendy.
It looks like the recessed lighting was left over from Rite Aid, as we can see it's no longer in use in the grocery aisles where they've added hanging fluorescent tubes.
It looks like the fixtures were mostly new here, too, which helps it feel less like a converted Rite Aid and more like a new supermarket.
Frozen and dairy in the last aisle.
Nice decor here, too! I did my best getting pictures of it...
Deli/bakery in the front corner. Small but a nice setup for sure.
And on the front end, I really like the trellis-type structures over the registers, too. Nicely done.
I'm really glad to see this decades-old A&P live on as a supermarket, but especially as a brand-new one. Nice work, Pioneer!
