Shop Fair Supermarkets

The grocery scene of downtown Hempstead is changing. Last fall, the Stop & Shop closed and, after an overnight transition, became Food Bazaar. Earlier in 2024, longtime Asian supermarket V&C closed, and it's now set to become a Shop Fair after extensive renovations. I stopped by the store on April 18 to find the renovation in full swing. I caught a few glimpses inside the windows, and it looks like the interior will be similar to this (that's a location in the Bronx). But at almost 40,000 square feet, this will be quite a bit larger than all the other Shop Fair locations. It's also one of the relatively few locations outside New York City for the group.
If you zoom into the above picture, you can see the signage being installed on the left side of the store facing Front Street. Notice that there's still an outline for the "international products" sign still in progress. The Shop Fair will, of course, look nothing like V&C's interior, and unlike V&C, it'll be a mainstream supermarket rather than an Asian one. Speaking of V&C...

Sadly, I wasn't able to make it to V&C before it went out of business. But the above picture, taken last summer, shows the outside right after it closed. The space was originally a Waldbaum's, constructed in the early 1980s or so, and by 2001 became V&C. It's possible some of the fixtures inside V&C were left over from Waldbaum's, but I don't know for sure. It's also possible that the department signage inside V&C were left from Waldbaum's, too. I'll be back once the Shop Fair opens also! Here's a look at our other posts for today...
