We all knew it was coming: the pagoda-inspired ShopRite of West Caldwell isn't long for this world. The previous store, which is equal parts cool and culturally insensitive, is slated to be replaced by a newly built, 90,000 square foot store just around the corner. Sunrise also owns a location in Parsippany. This store will be designed by the same firm responsible for the spectacular remodel at Nutley.
The new ShopRite will be directly across the street from the Stop & Shop in West Caldwell. That's a pleasant if somewhat quiet store, and although I really do think Stop & Shop has found its footing in New Jersey after some really rough times over the last year or two, there are still some obvious places for improvement. So let's check in on the West Caldwell store...
...where, inexplicably, the meat and seafood department has a completely empty service counter at midday on a Sunday. What happened here, if you go back and check out the older pictures, is that they got rid of the service meat counter and moved the seafood into that fixture, leaving the former seafood counter empty. I can only hope that this is temporary. In fact, the real estate company responsible for the Essex Mall says Stop & Shop is preparing to remodel this store. Maybe, just maybe, this is like this because they're preparing to replace the fixtures. At least, that's what it better be if they want to survive after ShopRite's opening day. We'll have to wait and see. Here's this weekend's other posts!

  1. I can't imagine that Shop & Shop has a pray after the new ShopRite opens. Remodel or not.
