As I have mentioned, a lot is happening in the supermarket world right about now, so you can expect to continue seeing a lot of updates and special reports as I am able to get out and see the new stores. This H Mart, the fourth in Manhattan and the twelfth in New York City overall, opened at the very end of May in a tiny former Rite Aid space. Produce is in the front right corner, with dairy and packaged prepared foods (not yet up and running at the time of my visit) in the rest of the first aisle. Meats line the back wall, with frozen on the left side of the store. The grocery aisles are split in half front-to-back. In a few parts of the country, H Mart doesn't actually own and operate all their stores; instead,

Anyone who's passed through East Rutherford on the Turnpike has seen American Dream , the massive shopping mall/amusement park/indoor water park/ski slope/I'm not even sure what else, that takes up 115 acres next to the MetLife Stadium. I haven't exactly had a compelling reason to visit, but the February 2023 opening of a smaller-format H Mart in the shopping mall portion did it for me. Would I ever go back? Well yeah probably, if only because I have a family member who was the main lawyer responsible for the financing of the construction, but even he doesn't really want to go. If you are ever going to the H Mart, there's no signage to help you navigate the multiple parking lots and garages once you get into the property, so you're headed for zone A floor 1. H Mart Opened: late 2022 Previous Tenants:  Foodtown > Edwards > Stop & Shop Location:  34-51 48th St, Long Island City, Queens, NY Photographed:  January 11, 2023 Have you toured the Long Island City Stop & Shop yet? That Stop & Shop closed in September 2022 and, by the end of the following month, the store had become a location of Lyndhurst, NJ-based H Mart, a Korean supermarket chain. H Mart did relatively little to the 57,000 square foot space before opening, with most of the work being light cosmetic (painting the walls and hanging a few new signs), and merchandising, since of course H Mart's product mix is going to be rather different from Stop & Shop's. I believe this is now the largest H Mart in New York City, though of course not the largest overall (you barely need to get 10 miles outside of New York City to find a 75,000 square foot H Mart ).
