TOUR: Weis Markets - Faxon, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 1950s Previous Tenants:  none Location:  305 River Ave, Faxon, Loyalsock, PA Photographed:  August 18, 2022 Welcome to the Weis of Faxon! This is a very old-school Weis, having been built in the 1950s (probably within a few years of Sunbury , juts under 30 miles south). Unlike the downtown Sunbury location, this store has been expanded and renovated, bringing it to its current 39,000 square feet or so. The store faces the side street, River Ave, with the registers running along this wall as seen above. The parking lot is mostly in what's now the front facing 3rd St. We enter to that side of the store with produce and deli in what amounts to the grand aisle. Meat/seafood run along the back wall of the store, with dairy/frozen on the right side and pharmacy/bakery in the front right corner -- or approximately where the words fresh market are in the above picture. Even though it's an old store, it's gotten some very nice upgrades, including the second-mos

431 Hepburn St, Williamsport, PA

Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 431 Hepburn St, Williamsport, PA Opened:  1950s Closed:  1975 Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  August 17, 2022 The southern end of this strip mall on the northern side of downtown Williamsport originally housed an A&P, having been built in the 1950s and, it seems, never being converted to a centennial-style store. The A&P then closed in 1975 and was put up for sale, although I'm not sure whether another grocery operator purchased it. It was later subdivided into two spaces, the larger of which was an A&A Auto Parts store and now Billtown Binz, a discount/surplus type general merchandise store. The full space is around 23,000 square feet. Tomorrow we're headed about a mile and a half east of town to tour a chain supermarket in the Faxon section of Williamsport on The Market Report !

Snapshot: Wegmans - Williamsport, PA

Wegmans Opened: 1990s Previous Tenants:  none Location:  201 William St, Williamsport, PA Photographed:  August 17, 2022 Downtown Williamsport is home to Lycoming College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology, among other things, and where the downtown area meets the river, where the interstate also runs through town, a cluster of stores and hotels is set up in a very suburban style. The supermarket anchor of this complex is a roughly 100,000 square foot Wegmans, built in the 1990s. Although Wegmans seems to prefer large, open strip malls in suburbs, they do have some downtown locations in mid-sized towns like Williamsport or Auburn, NY . There used to be other supermarkets in downtown Williamsport, and we're going to take a look at one of them tomorrow on Grocery Archaeology !
